LAOC Elite Wins the Swoosh Spring Showcase at Next Level Sports Complex

Garden Grove, CA – April 15, 2012 – Next Level Sports Complex hosted The Swoosh Spring Showcase tournament.  The tournament featured teams from across Orange and Los Angeles County, ranging from 9U to High School.  The complex was full of exciting stories throughout the weekend.  One of the most interesting stories involves LAOC Elite’s (14u) run for the championship.

LAOC Elite’s run began with two games on Saturday.  Both games of those games were blow out victories, with LAOC winning by an average margin of 40 points.  The most impressive parts of those wins, was their stifling team defense and extremely unselfish offense.  LAOC Elite is known for their up tempo style, they pressure & attack their opponent from the tip off.  They treat jump balls as an opportunity to score & pressure full court.

On Sunday, LAOC Elite continued with blowing out another team during their first game.  This victory put them into the semi-finals.  They played SGV in their semi-finals game.  SGV was previously unbeaten and looked very impressive during their tournament run.  During the first half of the game both teams were going back and forth, with neither team taking control of the game.  The second half of the game was a different story.  LAOC Elite’s relentless defense started to wear down SGV.  In the end, LAOC Elite won the game by 20 points.  The victory over SGV put LAOC Elite into the Championship Game.

The championship game would be another story for LAOC Elite, as they were facing IE Pacers.  LAOC Elite didn’t get off to a good start they were down by 7 with both of their big men in foul trouble.  The team confidence level was down and Coach Brown called a timeout to settle them down.  Coach Brown explained to the team that they needed to stay together and concentrate on their defense.  This timeout was the turning point in the game for LAOC Elite.  By halftime, LAOC Elite was only down by a small margin but closing the gap.  LAOC Elite came out strong in the second half and built up an 8 point lead.  However, when both big men had to sit out due to foul trouble, IE Pacers quickly erased the lead.  LAOC Elite turned up their effort on the defensive end and got three steals.  Unfortunately, they missed all three break away lay-ups.  Coach Brown was in shock and immediately called a timeout.  Coach Brown could see that his guard who missed the lay-ups was feeling down, so he huddled the team around him and asked them to “show him the love”.  Coach Brown told the team he would get another steal, make the lay-up and emphatically said “We Will Win!”.  Within the next few minutes, the guard (John Edgar Jr.) did steal the ball and made the lay-up.  LAOC Elite would go on to win the game and become champions of the Swoosh Spring Showcase.  In speaking with Coach Brown after the game, he said, “It might sound cliché but every player contributed in the team going undefeated and winning the Championship.  Each player had outstanding performances during the tournament.  Our philosophy & strategy is being unselfish on offense & defense. That being said, if we have a mismatch or one of our players has a hot hand, we will feed him.”
